An old fresh water line from cast iron had to be renewed because of leakage. Some years ago this pipe had been repaired with repair joints from steel.
The pipe should be replaced trenchless. This is why the cable burster TERRA-EXTRACTOR X 400 with a maximum pulling force of 40 tonnes (44 us tons, 88’000 lbs) was used. A roller cutter should cut the pipe and the repair collars.
The power pack drives the cable burster hydraulically and provides the electric power for the electronic control. The operator may adjust the hydraulic pressure with a remote control. On top you see a particle filter with is required in Switzerland.
The pulling cable is pulled into the old pipe with a fibre glass stick.
The old pipe ID 100 mm (4“) is cut with the roller cutter. The expander cone Ø 194 mm (7.6”) displaces the old pipe sidewise and expands the bore channel. The new pipe OD 160 mm (6.3”) can be pulled in. All these operations are done simultaneously.
The bursting job is succesfully finished. The repair joint was cut with the roller cutter. The new HDPE pipe OD 160 mm (6.3”) has been pulled in. Now the new pipe can be connected to the existing fresh water system.
